The Kabbalah of Mothers

By Yarin Weltsman (Queen Yarin)12 May 20262 min read

In short

The Hebrew word for mother, ima, contains em, source, along with aleph, beginnings, and mem, water and the womb. Kabbalah teaches that the soul chooses the circumstances it needs for its tikkun, and that we inherit from our ancestors not only trauma but also resilience and wisdom.

For Mothers Day : The Kabbalah of Mothers

Hebrew as a System of Reality

Hebrew is not just a language.

It is a system of reality.

In most languages, a word is a label.

We agreed that this sound means this thing. But in Hebrew, the word is the thing.

The letters are not symbols pointing to reality from the outside.

They are the structure of reality itself.

The Zohar teaches that G-d created the world through the Hebrew letters.

Each letter is a channel.

Each root word is a map of how something actually works, not just what to call it.

The Word אמא

Kabbalah teaches that the word אמא (Ima), mother in Hebrew, carries something deeper than most of us realise.

The root, אם (Em), means source.

Where something comes from.

And the letters tell the whole story:

א (Aleph): The beginning.

מ (Mem): Water. Life. The womb.

So when the word for mother (אמא) contains the word for source (אם), and the letter for water (מ), and the letter for beginnings (א), that is not poetry. That is a precise description of what a mother is at a cosmic level.

An entire story, coded into a single word.

In Judaism, a mother is not just the one who gives birth to you. She is your origin.

We Chose Our Mothers

Which brings us to something Kabbalah teaches about the soul.

We chose our parents.

Before this soul descended into this body, it stood before its Creator and chose the exact circumstances it needed for its tikkun - its mission.

Which means your mother was not an accident.

The warmth, the safety, the love she gave you, those were chosen.

And the wounds she carried, the ways she fell short, the things she could not give you, those were chosen too.

The mother wound is not random.

It is uniquely designed for the specific places in your soul that need to be opened, stretched, healed, and strengthened.

This is not a reason to bypass the pain. We need to use that pain to grow.

The pain has purpose.

What We Inherit

And then there is what she passed down without either of you knowing.

Kabbalah has always taught that we inherit more than eye colour and bone structure from our ancestors. We inherit their experience. The things that were too large to process move through generations until someone is ready to heal them.

Science now calls this epigenetics.

But we do not only inherit the trauma.

We inherit the wisdom too.

The resilience that carried your grandmother through the impossible. The love they poured into survival so that you could one day have the luxury of healing.

All of it is in you. Claim it babyyyy.

Naming Your Source

So when you say Ima.

You are naming your source.

You are holding, in a single word, centuries of inheritance: the wounds and the wisdom, the limitation and the love.

And now you decide what to do with it.

That is your tikkun.

That is why you chose her.

Happy Mothers Day!!
